Front

The 5¼" Front Speaker MKII

These are the speakers that do the talking. Call-outs and sirens come from up here, and so does the top end of the music. All of it has to get through the speaker panel before it reaches you. The tweeter is a ½" PEI dome, a material that comes from pro audio, and it does not get harsh when you turn the volume up. The treated fabric surround is a double roll, so the cone moves the same distance in and out.

The 8" Subwoofer MKII

This is the speaker that takes the bass off the front pair. Everything under the voices comes down here, and the 8" carries the explosions, the engines and the bass line of the music. A pinball cabinet is a big wooden box, and at full power you hear that across the room and feel it in the floor. Black Nomex spider, woven tinsel leads. Those are the parts that keep the subwoofer rattle-free after hours of play.

MKII - Rebuilt from the magnet out

Every one of these features is there to make the SonataSPK the last set of speakers your pinball machine will ever need.

Your surrounds will not crumble

The subwoofer surround is butyl rubber. Foam surrounds fail in ten to twenty years, which is almost certainly why you are replacing your originals right now.

It still sounds like itself in ten years

A treated fiber cone. Untreated paper takes on moisture, gains mass and goes soft. That is what makes an old speaker sound dull.

No rattle to chase

The tinsel leads are sewn down. Loose leads slap the cone at volume, and owners spend months blaming the cabinet for it.

Louder from the same amplifier

An oversized magnet. More flux means more output per watt, and enough thermal headroom that hour three sounds like hour one.

Cleaner when it is working hard

The dust cap is inverted and the former is vented. Inverted dust csap minimizes vent chuffing and turbulence noise. Hard transients stay clean at the volume you actually play at.

It only goes on one way

A keyed connector with a locking clip. Wiring a speaker out of phase is the classic upgrade mistake, and here it is physically impossible. It cannot shake loose either.

It plugs into your harness

Legacy spade pads, spade terminals. No adapter to buy, nothing to cut, no soldering iron required.

Ich kann nicht glauben, dass die Sounds so toll sind. Es hat meine Maschine eine völlig andere und so viel besser jetzt gemacht. Die Lautsprecher sind fantastisch.   1. The MKII covers the 8" subwoofer and the 5¼" front speaker. The 4" front speaker is still the MKI speaker, unchanged and in full production. Kits shipping 5¼" fronts: Bally and Williams WPC, Stern SPIKE 2. Kits shipping 4" fronts: Data East, Sega and Stern Whitestar, Stern SAM, Stern SPIKE 1.
  2. Sound boards are not part of a SonataSPK kit and are sold separately. The kits for Bally and Williams, Data East, and Sega and Stern Whitestar require a PinSound NEO or PLUS board. The kit for Stern SAM requires a PINBLASTER. The kits for Stern SPIKE 1 and SPIKE 2 work with or without a PINBLASTER board.
